A Wharton professor who studies how careers really work
Matthew Bidwell is the Xingmei Zhang and Yongge Dai Professor and Professor of Management at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
He is the Faculty Director of the Wharton People Analytics Initiative and the Academic Director of the Wharton Chief Human Resources Officer program, as well as an Associate Editor at Organization Science. Author of countless (okay, 33 and counting) academic articles, he is a past winner of the ASQ Award for Scholarly Contribution and the LERA John Dunlop Outstanding Scholar Award. His teaching and research focus on understanding modern careers and employment.
Matthew’s own path demonstrates careers’ complexity. Originally from the UK, he studied chemistry as an undergraduate, before switching to political science for his master’s degree. He briefly worked at McKinsey before retreating back into academia, earning a PhD from MIT. He has spent time working in the UK, Singapore, and the US.
